Mark Harmon’s Gibbs clearly left an impression on former NCIS stalwart Michael Weatherly, even though he left Tony DiNozzo’s life behind him many years ago.
NCIS fans will recall that Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) debuted the new series with a look that was quite different from what CBS viewers had grown accustomed to. Gibbs had a new beard while adjusting to his new life in Mexico at the time, but by the time he returned to Washington to reunite with the likes of Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), he had fashioned his facial hair into a rather striking moustache.
Now, almost 17 years after Gibbs debuted the look, Tony winner Weatherly has revealed that he was inspired by his former co-choice. star’s
Weatherly, who has been fueling rumors that he will return to the CBS drama in its 20th season following the end of drama Bull, revealed to fans that he is dressed similarly.
There’s still no word on whether he’ll be debuting his own moustache before season 20, and he’s also avoided showing it to fans online.
“I’m working on a mustache (moustache), and my daughter is adamant: this will not stand,” he told his 467k Twitter followers.
“Clearly, it is polarizing,” he added, before listing some influences he hopes will persuade his family to support him.
Weatherly continued, “Tonight we watch Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid,” referring to his former NCIS days.
“Then some Magnum PI original sauce, followed by Gibbs season 4…” Perhaps Gone With The Wind?
“How far will it go?” he signed off before closing his update with a moustachioed emoji.
While Weatherly’s new look may have elicited some stern words at home, it also divided his fans, who were quick to react to his transformation.
Carol Mitchell responded with an old selfie of an unshaven Michael Weatherly and typed, “Oh, Michael, no, no, no.
“No moustache unless accompanied by a beard. Such as this. With that twinkle in your eyes, this looks amazing. (It’s good to see that twinkle return.)”
“I think any style will suit you,” Lesley Evans said. Except for “The Handlebar.”
“I knew that sooner or later the moustache issue would appear,” Marcella Pagano said. I’m sorry, but Olivia is completely correct!
“You’re lucky because you know they’re very attached to their fathers and want the best for them, and Olivia has good taste in clothing so…listen to her!” Don’t give up, Olivia!”
Serena Nelson chimed in, saying that Weatherly’s new restroom reminded her of Tony’s reaction to Gibbs: “I immediately thought of Tony’s reaction to Gibbs.”
“Well, it depends if Ziva will like it,” @benslerfan6313 said in response to the return rumors. When will you see her again?”
It remains to be seen whether Weatherly will stick to his guns and keep the facial hair going forward, but fans will undoubtedly enjoy seeing the new look in action.
Weatherly left NCIS in 2016 to begin his role as Jason Bull in the hit CBS legal drama.
But, with Bull ending in 2022, could Weatherly channel his inner Gibbs as part of a return to NCIS in 2023?
