NCIS: Could Michael Weatherly Return in a Different Role Than Before..?

When TV shows list their awards, they must be very specific, so bear with us here. As of last year, NCIS was the second-longest-running scripted, non-animated primetime TV series in the United States. The JAG spin-19th off’s season premiered in September 2021 and will conclude next month. With the final episode approaching, fans are already anticipating Season 20 and speculating on what it might look like. Michael Weatherly, a star on NCIS, in particular, has been a hot topic.

Weatherly, who plays fan favorite Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo, left the show in the final episode of Season 13 almost 7 years ago. DiNozzo resigns from the unit rather than leaving on a more permanent basis. He’s in a state of mental anguish because he believes his long-term love interest, Ziva, is d3ad.

Michael Weatherly explained the real-life reason for his departure in a 2016 interview. “I’d had enough of NCIS and was looking for a new challenge.” It was as if a circle had gone all the way around. And I was really pleased with the character’s resolution and my time on the show.”

Despite the fact that Weatherly’s departure from the show was years ago, NCIS fans still mourn his loss and wish for his return. They might just get it – but not in the way you might expect.

Michael Weatherly, you see, not only has acting experience, but he has also dabbled in directing. In fact, he’s already directed two NCIS episodes, one in Season 8 and one in Season 10. He’s been working on another CBS series called Bull since leaving the procedural drama. Bull, on the other hand, is nearing the end of its run, making Weatherly available for additional directing work.

Aside From Michael Weatherly’s Return, ‘NCIS’ Season 20 Speculation

NCIS Season 20 has yet to be officially confirmed. Fans, on the other hand, are confident that it will happen. Mark Harmon is unlikely to return because his character, long-time team leader Jethro Gibbs, retired to Alaska early in Season 19. With that in mind, we can expect to see more of Gary Cole as Alden Parker, an FBI agent and current unit leader.

We can also safely expect the return of Rocky Carroll, Brian Dietzen, Katrina Law, and other NCIS regulars, unless the final two episodes throw us a curveball. Some fans are speculating that Anothony DiNozzo and Ziva David will return, but it’s difficult to say whether this is likely or just fans wishing to see their favorites again.

We can only take shots in the dark because we haven’t heard anything concrete one way or the other. But who knows? Weatherly has previously acted in and directed NCIS episodes, so maybe he’ll do it again!
