Fans of the CBS drama NCIS are looking forward to the return of Mark Harmon.
At the start of season 19, Special Agent in Charge Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) announced his retirement from NCIS. But even after several episodes, he’s still on everyone’s mind, especially after his most recent act of generosity. Many NCIS fans are now interpreting the character’s kind gesture as yet another sign that the former leader will return to the show soon.

NCIS returned from its holiday break with a new episode last Monday, beginning with McGee (Sean Murray) and Palmer (Brian Dietzen) trying to figure out why $10,000 had been deposited into each of their bank accounts. Despite their best efforts, the special agent and chief medical examiner were unsuccessful. Vance (Rocky Carroll) turned out to have the answers to all of their questions.

“I just wanted to say hello as the newest members of the Leroy Jethro Gibbs College Scholarship [Fund],” he said to McGee and Palmer. Vance revealed that he had received the same deposit as other special agents and their families after both NCIS team members agreed it was “way too generous” and they couldn’t possibly keep it.

The director went on to say that it was Gibbs’ way of honoring his late daughter, Kelly, for whom he had started the college fund in the first place. He continued to contribute to it after she d1ed, and over the years he had given the money to other agents’ children so they could get a better education. “I just wish I could thank him in person,” Palmer said. “Well, hopefully one day,” Vance responded.

Although the gift for their children caught the NCIS team off guard, viewers were not as surprised and added this moment to their growing pile of evidence that the former leader will return to the show. When the show shared the touching moment on Instagram, many fans confirmed their theory that Gibbs was booking his flight back to Washington, D.C.

“I can feel him coming back soon anyways Alaska is too cold to live now,” one user commented on Instagram. “It’s not a foreshadowing of Gibbs’ return,” another said. “‘Hopefully one day you will’ = ‘Mark Harmon might return from time to time,'” said another fan.

NCIS fans are certainly making a strong case for a possible Gibbs return, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
