Why Tom Selleck Felt Intimidated Playing Dad Frank Reagan on ‘Blue Bloods’

When Blue Bloods first began, Tom Selleck admitted that stepping into the role of NYPD patriarch Frank Reagan was a challenge.

“This is the first time I’ve played dad to grown-ups,” Tom stated in a 2010 Collider interview. “I had a wonderful father, so maybe I’m drawing on that, but it seemed daunting. I’ve portrayed fathers to children and teenagers before, but this was a fresh and challenging experience for me.”

Another hurdle for Tom was the idea of shooting a New York City-based drama. “The first question I asked was, ‘Where are you shooting it?’” he recalled. “But I quickly saw how shooting on the streets of New York made the show better, and that excited me.”

Fourteen years later, Tom has no regrets. As the 14th season of Blue Bloods comes to a close, he expressed disappointment at the show’s ending, despite its long-running success. “We’re still a top-rated show, ranking ninth in total viewers from 2023 to 2024. In October 2023, he told TV Insider, “If you exclude football, we’re sixth!”

Tom lamented that the show’s consistent performance may have been taken for granted. “It’s hard to accept, especially when the entire cast wanted to return. Most shows don’t end with everyone on good terms, but we overcame any drama. That’s something we can all be proud of.”

Reflecting about the cast’s camaraderie, he said, “The actor family became as close as the Reagan family on screen.” “It’s a rare and unique thing.”

Though saying goodbye wasn’t easy, Selleck cherishes the legacy Blue Bloods leaves behind.
