“G. Callen.” Season 1. “H. Lange” Season 3. “Blye, K.” Third season. “Granger, O.” 7th season. It’s about time for a “Deeks, M.” episode to join that list, and NCIS: Los Angeles Season 14 is shaping up to be ideal for it so far. (We haven’t forgotten that, to our surprise, we haven’t gotten a “Hanna, S.” episode either.)
The CBS procedural drama has always done a good job with character-centric episodes, but it’s those name-specific ones that delve into one team member’s past that we really enjoy. And, given everything that has happened to Investigator Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) in Season 14, it would be fitting for this to be his (final) year.
After all, it’s a big family season for him. Deeks and Special Agent Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) are now parents to Rosa (Natalia Del Riego), whom they were approved to foster in the Season 13 finale, and are figuring out how to balance their work and personal lives. Deeks’ mother, Roberta (Pamela Reed, who is always a delight), lives nearby, providing us with numerous great scenes involving her and Deeks, her and Kensi, and now her and Rosa. You know she’ll be in the “Deeks, M.” episode whenever it airs, and now they don’t even have to come up with a reason for her to be there.
And Deeks’ past with his father came up in relation to a case in “Flesh & Blood,” when he recognized a suspect had been abused by the v1ctim’s husband. Deeks’ father abused him and his mother, and as a child, Deeks had to shoot him in self-defense; the then-LAPD liaison found out years later that he d1ed in a car accident.
“It’s June 30, 1990, and my mother decides to take me to see the Dodgers play the Cardinals, and I will never forget that day,” Deeks explained to the woman. “The only reason I remember it is because it was so hot, like LA had just recovered from a massive heatwave, and I can still see the ice cream cone melting as it’s passed down the row.”
Another thing I remember from that day is my mother, who is sitting next to me in this 90-degree heat, dressed in jeans and a long-sleeve turtleneck. And she was covered up like that for the entire summer, which is irrelevant because she couldn’t hide the bruises on her face.”
“Did he at least spare you?” she inquired. “No. But, you know, I was a kid, right? Children are expected to have bruises. “I’d just tell the teachers I got in another fight on the playground,” he explained. Then she talked about her husband’s abuse.
Deeks asked his mother how she got through the case after it was finished. “Oh, honey, how the hell do I know? That son of a b*tch didn’t make things easy for us. “He took everything from us, kid, including who I was,” Roberta explained. “But thanks to you, I got her back. And I vowed to myself that I would never lose her again. Is the life I’ve built for myself since then ideal? No, but it belongs to me.”
Our only request for the upcoming “Deeks, M.” episode? Ray (Channon Roe), Deeks’ childhood friend who served as a confidential informant before going into witness protection, should be brought back or at least mentioned. After all, wouldn’t he like to know that Kensi and Deeks have progressed beyond their “thing”?
Plus, after executive producer R. Scott Gemmill told TV Insider last spring that “we always keep it [in the back of our minds]” that a season could be the last and that “it’ll be sad, but everything has to come to an end at some point,” we’d like to get that “Deeks, M.” episode (along with the “Hanna, S.” one) while we know we absolutely can.
