Tony Todd, the legendary actor who played the main villain in the “Candyman” horror series, died at the age of 69 in his home in California. His manager, Jeffrey Goldberg, announced Todd’s death, stating, “What an amazing man, and I will miss him every single day.” Todd reportedly died from natural causes.
Todd first terrified audiences as “Candyman” in the 1992 original film and reprised his role in the franchise’s sequels. His performance as the hook-handed, vengeful ghost became legendary, cementing him as a horror icon. Beyond “Candyman,” Todd’s filmography spanned over 240 roles, including notable appearances in “Final Destination,” “Platoon,” and “The Rock.”
Virginia Madsen, Todd’s co-star in the original “Candyman,” paid him an emotional tribute, characterizing him as “an angel” and stating, “My beloved Candyman.”
Born on December 4, 1954, in Washington, DC, Todd trained at the Eugene O’Neill National Actors Theatre Institute and made his big break in Oliver Stone’s “Platoon” (1986). Over the years, he became a steady presence in both film and TV, with roles on shows like “21 Jump Street,” “The X-Files,” “Law & Order,” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
Todd was successful in action pictures as well as horror, including “The Crow” (1994) and “The Rock” (1996). He also became a successful voice actor, providing his distinct voice to “Transformers,” “Star Trek” games, and other projects.
Todd is survived by his extensive body of work, with eight projects yet to be released, including “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” set to debut next year.
