Tom Selleck’s Character on Blue Bloods has Earned Him Real Law Enforcement Credentials

Tom Selleck, best known for his roles in “Magnum, P.I.” and the “Jesse Stone” series, currently plays New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan on “Blue Bloods.” Surprisingly, Selleck draws inspiration for his role in the series from real-life former New York City Police Commissioner Bill Bratton.

In an interview with TV Insider to commemorate the 250th episode of “Blue Bloods,” the actor revealed why he believes the CBS show is still so popular: it’s a character-driven show.

“The cop drama serves as a backdrop for the five main characters’ lives.” “Because the audience is so invested in these characters, the biggest danger in our show is often when one of the relationships in the Irish Catholic family appears to be unraveling,” he explained.

Given Selleck’s long history of appearing in law-enforcement-themed TV shows, some may wonder how he is greeted by real-life law enforcement.

Real officers salute Tom Selleck.

In a PaleyFest NY panel, Tom Selleck shared his favorite reactions to “Blue Bloods,” particularly the touching experience of receiving salutes from real law enforcement officers.

He expressed appreciation for this gesture, as it mirrors how they would greet an actual police commissioner.

Celebrating 13 seasons as a significant achievement, both Tom Selleck and his TV daughter, Bridget Moynahan (Erin), express their willingness to continue for many more seasons.

Their gratitude for being part of the show is evident, acknowledging the rarity of such opportunities in the industry.
