Tom Selleck’s role on Blue Bloods is fantastic, but I’m disappointed that a promise about his Jesse Stone series wasn’t fully kept. While I’ve loved watching Selleck on Blue Bloods for the past 14 years, it’s sad the show is coming to an end, despite its continued popularity. With CBS canceling the series, only a few episodes remain.
One potential benefit is that Selleck may return to the Jesse Stone films. He appeared in nine films as a small-town sheriff battling alcoholism, the last of which was released in 2015, a year after Blue Bloods premiered.
Tom Selleck Prioritized Jesse Stone Over Blue Bloods to Keep the Franchise Alive
While it might seem that Selleck’s involvement in Blue Bloods ended the Jesse Stone series, the actor was initially determined that this wouldn’t happen. Just before Blue Bloods premiered in 2014, Selleck expressed hesitancy about the show, fearing it could interfere with his work on Jesse Stone (via Metro). Although the last Jesse Stone movie aired in 2015, Selleck spoke of making a tenth film, but it never materialized.
I’m unhappy that there hasn’t been a Jesse Stone film in nearly a decade. The series not only highlighted Selleck’s versatility, but also contrasted his characters. Frank Reagan is a well-respected police commissioner in a big metropolis, whereas Jesse Stone is a small-town sheriff dealing with personal issues. Seeing Selleck play both characters would have been fascinating, and he may have gained new admirers.
Disappointed by the Long Wait for a New Jesse Stone Movie
It’s been nearly a decade since Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise aired, and fans are still waiting for another installment. After CBS dropped the series following the eighth film, Benefit of the Doubt, due to its appeal to older audiences, Selleck sold the script for Lost in Paradise to Hallmark, which aired it in 2015.
Selleck had planned to shoot a tenth film, but his concentration turned to Blue Bloods. The last scene of Lost in Paradise, with Jesse sitting by the ocean with his new dog, felt like a set-up for future adventures rather than a closure. Fans, including me, are sad that the series appears to have been left incomplete.
