Tom Selleck at 79: Reflecting on a Legendary Career

As Tom Selleck nears 80, he’s still going strong. The beloved star of Blue Bloods and Magnum, P.I. has just released his memoir, You Never Know, and continues to savor his quiet life away from Hollywood at his 63-acre ranch. Nestled an hour outside the city, his property has become a peaceful retreat where he tends the land with the same dedication he’s poured into his acting career.

“It’s like a dream,” Selleck says. “I know every foot of it. Every day, I check my wells to see what’s growing-it’s a great vacation from the madness.” Dean Martin once owned the property, which has been Selleck’s hideaway since 1988, and he has personally planted over 500 oak trees. He points to a young oak with a minor discoloration and adds, “This one’s for my dad, and he pruned it himself.” This brief exchange reveals an emotional side to the renowned tough guy.

A Career Built with Resilience

Selleck’s path to fame didn’t come easily. Starting with small TV roles and commercials, he adopted a “keep laying bricks” approach that ultimately led him to his breakthrough role at age 35 with Magnum, P.I. But even with success, he focused on adding depth to his characters, fighting to include challenging themes, like the Vietnam War, despite network hesitation.

In his memoir, Selleck avoids gossip and politics, instead focusing on the ideals and lessons that shaped him. “I didn’t want to settle scores or set records straight,” he says, describing the book as an honest look at his path, including both highs and lows.

The Man Behind the Mustache

And then there’s the mustache-an iconic feature that, surprisingly, wasn’t a planned choice. “It wasn’t because Burt Reynolds had one,” he laughs, remembering the humor it’s sparked in late-night appearances.

As Blue Bloods comes to an end after a great 14-season run, Selleck is proud of the show’s emphasis on family values. Looking ahead, he’s willing to take things as they come. “I’ve got a lot of trees to watch,” he adds, smiling. For Tom Selleck, it’s always been about the journey, and at 79, he’s still developing.
