“NCIS: Los Angeles” is a spin-off of the immensely popular cr1me procedural “NCIS,” and it follows a team of agents who investigate cr1mes ranging from murd3rs and kidnappings to major national security threats.
The series’ characters each bring their own set of skills to each investigation, whether it’s combat, language, or undercover espionage. Special Agent Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) epitomizes this ethos. She is a former Marine with extensive survivalist training, and she studied politics in college.
Kensi is well-known among the other agents for being extremely intelligent and self-sufficient, if a little chaotic with her notoriously messy ways. When she’s on a case, her skills and intelligence shine through, and she never lets her guard down, making her a near-perfect agent… most of the time. Notably, Kensi maintains a friendship with fellow agent Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen). The show’s exploration of their relationship has given both characters more depth, but that doesn’t mean that the moments that emerge from these relationship storylines are always well received by fans. One Kensi moment, in particular, exemplifies how the show sometimes takes her relationship with Deeks too far.
Kensi allows her relationship drama to get in the way
The team travels to Mexico in the two-part Season 9 finale of “NCIS: Los Angeles” to find a small boy who is in grave danger. While everyone else is hurrying to leave, Kensi and Deeks argue about their future together. Deeks wants them to quit their jobs and start a family, but Kensi disagrees, sparking a heated debate about whether they should cancel their upcoming wedding. Kensi eventually storms away, leaving the rest of the crew on the sidelines, no doubt wondering when they will get around to saving that kid.
This is all serious relationship stuff that should undoubtedly be discussed before a wedding. But is it appropriate to do so in a parking lot while the rest of your team is waiting to save a small child from a life-threatening situation? Furthermore, when viewers tune in to a cr1me procedural’s season finale, are they watching to see how the case is solved or to see two people work out their relationship issues?
The scene is also not the first time Kensi and Deeks have argued about their problems. While the couple has fans, many viewers were sick of seeing the same storyline over and over. u/InGenCorp wrote in a Reddit thread about the couple, “What irritates me is that nearly every scene in which they are alone returns to the marriage. We already know they’re getting married; we don’t need to be reminded of it every episode.” Meanwhile, u/unintelligentnerd commented, “This isn’t why I watch this show!”
The frustrating and momentum-k1lling pre-flight fight is perhaps the best example of a Kensi scene that went too far with her relationship storyline.
