It’s been nearly a month since NCIS: Los Angeles ended its 14-season run with a two-part series finale on May 14 and May 21.
However, plans for the show’s expansion are just getting started, with the first of the franchise’s global spin-offs, NCIS: Sydney, already in the works.
Over a year after the Australian spin-off was first announced, Deadline reported that the show has cast its special agents and narrowed down on a central cast list, which was also shared on CBS’ social media.
Olivia Swann as NCIS Special Agent Michelle Mackey and Todd Lasance as Sergeant Jim ‘JD’ Dempsey lead the charge.
Sean Sagar will portray NCIS Special Agent DeShawn Jackson, Tuuli Narkle will portray AFP Liaison Officer Constable Evie Cooper, Mavournee Hazel will portray AFP Forensic Scientist Bluebird ‘Blue’ Gleeson, and William McInnes will portray AFP Forensic Pathologist Dr Roy Penrose.
The series’ filming is already underway in Sydney. NCIS: Sydney, like previous installments of the franchise, follows a group of daring special agents from the Naval Cr1m1nal Investigative Services as they solve cr1mes while also exploring their interpersonal relationships.
ViacomCBS, Network 10 Australia, and Paramount Plus Australia reached an agreement to bring the show to international markets.
In a statement to the outlet, Rick Maier, Head of Drama at Paramount Australia and New Zealand, said, “One of the world’s most beloved franchises is in the hands of one of our best production companies.”
“NCIS: Sydney is an exciting project for all of us at Paramount, and we hope it will be one of the most eagerly anticipated commissions of the year.”
Lindsey Martin, Head of International Co-Productions and Development at CBS Studios, added, “We are thrilled to be expanding the NCIS franchise, one of our most powerful and iconic television IPs, across borders and into Australia.”
Beverley McGarvey, Chief Content Officer and Executive Vice President, ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand, told TV Tonight when the show was first announced in February 2022: “It is such a privilege to be able to continue the legacy of such a wonderful show and incorporate the superior NCIS storytelling while introducing new Australian characters and locations.”
Furthermore, NCIS: Los Angeles creator Shane Brennan, an Australian himself, is attached to the project and will direct this iteration as well.
The spin-off will air on Network 10 in Australia, and will be available to watch globally on Paramount Plus Australia.
In the United States, CBS will air the show alongside the main franchise and another spin-off, NCIS: Hawai’i, so American viewers will be able to follow the exploits of the special agents from Down Under.
The show’s premiere date has not yet been set, but the network stated in its announcement that it will be released later this year.
