Legendary Fitness Personality ‘Richard Simmons’ Passes Away at 76

Fitness guru Richard Simmons has died at 76, confirmed by law enforcement sources to NBC News. Simmons was found unresponsive at his Hollywood Hills home one day after his birthday. The exact cause of death is pending.

Simmons’ brother, Lenny Simmons, emphasized the family’s astonishment and requested privacy, saying, “I want people to remember him for the genuine joy and love he brought into people’s lives.”

Simmons, known for his eccentric personality and “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” workout videos, became a fitness icon in the 1970s and 1980s. He helped millions lose weight with his balanced eating programs and energetic exercise routines.

Simmons, who was born in New Orleans, struggled with his weight from an early age, eventually reaching 268 pounds in high school. Inspired by a letter left on his car, he embarked on a weight loss adventure that lead him to study health and nutrition. He relocated to Los Angeles in 1973 and established SLIMMONS Gym in Beverly Hills in 1974.

Simmons gained celebrity clients and appeared regularly on TV, leading to his own Emmy-winning series, “The Richard Simmons Show.” He released 65 fitness videos, selling over 20 million copies, and authored several books and cookbooks.

Simmons had been a recluse since 2014. In January, he resisted a movie about his life starring Pauly Shore, claiming on Facebook that he never approved it. Despite this, he was active on social media, providing inspirational words and personal tales.

In March, Simmons posted a cryptic message about “dying,” later clarifying it as a call to live life fully. He also revealed a basal cell carcinoma diagnosis, which he said was resolved after treatment.

The connection between his recent diagnosis and his death remains unclear.
