The latest episode of NCIS has fans buzzing with subtle nods to the great Leroy Jethro Gibbs, played by Mark Harmon. Gibbs, who retired to Alaska in season 19, remains a significant role in the show’s legacy, and writers continue to pay tribute to his character.
In season 22, episode 7, “Hardboiled,” the team investigates the murd3r of Roger Carnahan, a scientist working on a hypersonic missile project called MAD Falcon.
During the investigation, Agent Parker (Gary Cole) references Gibbs’s famous Rule 39: “There’s no such thing as a coincidence,” delighting long-time viewers. One fan wrote on social media: “Love how even in S22 the writers still give us references back to Gibbs. Thanks for keeping his spirit alive.”
Meanwhile, in a lighter subplot, Dr. Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) and Agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) supervise a kids’ soccer game. A contentious call sparks a heated elevator conversation between the two, with Palmer joking that it’s his first time utilizing the “Gibbs conference room”—a reference to Gibbs’ iconic habit of halting elevators for private conversations.
Fans appreciated the Easter eggs, with one commenting, “Jimmy pulling a Gibbs, omgggg,” and another calling the elevator scene “a nice heartfelt nod to Gibbs.”
