NCIS’ Mark Harmon Spinoff to Explore Gibbs’ Darkest Storyline, First Unveiled 18 Years Ago

Mark Harmon’s upcoming NCIS spinoff will revisit one of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ darkest storylines, first introduced 18 years ago. Though Harmon left the show in NCIS season 19, he will now return as a narrator for the new prequel series, which delves into Gibbs’ early career with the organization. Harmon will produce the project alongside his son, Sean Harmon, who previously portrayed a younger version of Gibbs on NCIS.

Gibbs did not die after his departure, but instead chose a peaceful life in Alaska, keeping the door open for future visits. The new spinoff provides an opportunity to delve into some of Gibbs’ sad previous occurrences, which impacted his character.

NCIS Prequel’s Time Setting Aligns with the Tragic Murd3r of Gibbs’ Wife and Daughter

The NCIS prequel will explore Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ early career, set in the early ’90s while he was stationed at Camp Pendleton. This period coincides with the tragic murd3r of his first wife, Shannon, and their eight-year-old daughter, Kelly, by a Mexican drug dealer named Pedro Hernandez. Gibbs’ family was k1lled because Shannon witnessed a murd3r at the base.

Though this terrible occurrence was first introduced in NCIS season 3, it has never been properly explored on TV. The prequel allows us to explore deeper into this key element of Gibbs’ background.

How the Death of Gibbs’ Wife and Daughter Shapes the Emotional Tone of the NCIS Prequel

The tragic death of Gibbs’ first wife, Shannon, and daughter, Kelly, casts a long shadow over his life, shaping his character in NCIS and setting a darker tone for the upcoming prequel. While NCIS has never avoided dealing with loss, Gibbs’ personal tragedy is one of the series’ most haunting storylines. Their deaths marked a turning point in his life, influencing his later failed marriages and his emotionally distant nature.

By focusing on this sad episode, the NCIS prequel may take on a more solemn tone than the original series, anchoring Gibbs’ early career in the loss and tragedy that created him.
