In a touching homage to the late Dr. Mallard, affectionately known as Ducky, NCIS Season 21’s tribute episode, “The Stories We Leave Behind,” subtly nods to another fan-favorite character, Abby, six years after Pauley Perrette’s departure from the show.
The episode concentrates around Ducky’s final case, providing a bittersweet farewell to the beloved medical examiner-turned-historian, whose death coincides with David McCallum’s in 2023.
While several options for honoring Ducky were discussed, including a star-studded reunion, it was decided to bring back Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo to support Ducky’s mentee, Jimmy Palmer. Furthermore, references to Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Perrette’s Abby enrich the poignant tribute.
NCIS Season 21 continues to captivate audiences with its enduring legacy and heartfelt nods to its rich history, ensuring Ducky’s memory lives on in the hearts of fans worldwide.
NCIS Season 21, Episode 2: Abby Sends Flowers to Ducky
The latest episode of NCIS Season 21 featured a poignant homage to the famous character Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard. Among the rush of flowers from many agencies and groups expressing condolences, one arrangement stood out: black roses with a sparkly skull, a hallmark of fan favorite Abby Sciuto. Although Abby does not present physically, her presence may be felt as the wreath arrives in Kasie’s lab, which was formerly Abby’s territory. The act tells much about Ducky and Abby’s enduring connection, and it adds a touching touch to the tribute episode.
It would have been wonderful to see her return to pay tribute to Dr. Mallard, but the black wreath is also a good gesture.

It was a great tribute loved seeing Tony. Abby’s flowers were amazing, I personally would have loved to see her. It would’ve made the show if Gibbs could have been there.
On a serious note have you thought about offering scholarships for kids on behalf of “Abby “ for the kids who want to be forensic scientists like her. My niece Kennedy loved her on the show and wants to be like her. That’s the field she’s going to go into and she’s a straight A student. She will be a sophomore in the fall. I’m just asking you to think about, NCIS has touched a lot of people.
