‘NCIS: Origins’ Boss Responds to Concerns About Potential Gibbs’ Dad Plot Hole

The upcoming NCIS Origins prequel has sparked discussion among fans regarding a potential plot hole involving Agent Gibbs’ estranged father. Set in 1991, the CBS spin-off will explore Gibbs’ (Austin Stowell) early career at NCIS Camp Pendleton, under the leadership of Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid).

The series will feature younger versions of known characters, such as Mike and Agent Vera Strickland (Diany Rodriguez). Notably, it will feature Gibbs’ father, Jackson Gibbs, played by Robert Taylor, who succeeds the late Ralph Waite, who played the part on NCIS.

The concern arises because, in the original series, Gibbs hadn’t spoken to his dad since the funeral of his wife Shannon and daughter Kelly, reuniting only in season six. This raises questions about how Jackson’s inclusion in the prequel will fit within the established timeline.

Co-showrunner David North has addressed the matter, reassuring fans that they have studied the canon and rectified it. North stated that Jackson’s involvement will remain essential, with the possibility of flashbacks or indirect contacts to maintain continuity.

Fans won’t have to wait long to see how NCIS Origins handles Jackson’s involvement in Gibbs’ life from a distance.
