When a cryptic message appears to allude to Hetty’s current whereabouts, the next episode of NCIS LA on CBS looks set to be a monumental one for the likes of Callen and the rest of the OSP.
Hetty (Linda Hunt) hasn’t been seen on NCIS LA since she went rogue and traveled to the Middle East in season 13. However, in episode 16 of the CBS drama’s 14th and final season, Callen (Chris O’Donnell) and Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) appear to have just the information to lead her back to the team.
The catalyst for Hetty’s potential return occurs when NCIS Reserve Agent Shyla Dahr (Javi Ramachandran Ladnier) informs Callen and Sam of some concerning news.
“We just received an urgent message containing two files,” she says to the couple.
“The first is a driver’s license for John Jenkins, CEO of a software company.” “The second is an identification card for FBI analyst Patrick Hertel,” she informs the two.
Sam wonders why these two IDs came from a top-secret emergency channel, prompting Shyla to reveal the two men were murd3red that morning.
When she reveals that they were both shot, Callen looks for a link.
However, he falls short, leaving Shyla in the dark about what to do.
However, Sam notices a series of numbers that he is eager to decipher, but the team is once again stumped.
This prompts Callen to dismiss the information and suggest that Shyla find out who sent the messages.
She then informs the two that it was sent from Al-Rai, a small town near the Turkish-Syrian border.
The realization dawns on Callen and Sam, who exchange glances before Sam adds, “That was her last known location.”
“But it doesn’t make any sense,” Callen muses before Sam responds, “Who else would send such a cryptic message?”
Shyla quickly realizes who the two are talking about when Callen confirms: “Hetty.”
In a separate scene, Callen delivers the information to Kilbride (Gerald McRaney), who is clearly skeptical that Hetty is the one attempting to contact him.
“If it was that important, she would have sent us more than two names and a random set of numbers,” he argues. “This reads more like a top-secret butt dial than an urgent message.”
Callen admits that the message is “cryptic even for Hetty,” before Kilbride rants that he shouldn’t be surprised by the prospect of re-establishing contact with his boss and mentor.
But he gradually wins Kilbride over, implying that Hetty is aware that the team’s presumably secure channels have been compromised, hence the cryptic material.
Callen eventually gets Kilbride’s permission to investigate the two v1ct1ms in the hopes of finding a link to Hetty, though Kilbride does make a joke about Hetty’s “constant backseat driving.”
A third sneak peek demonstrates the team’s suspicions, as the two men targeted were both from the Drona Project, the same project Callen was enlisted in as a child.
Given the murd3rs of the two men, could Callen be next in line? Will Hetty’s intervention be enough to put him ahead?
