NCIS: Gibbs’ Return Has Been ‘Sealed’, as the Long-Serving Co-Star Admitting He is ‘The Moral Compass’

Rocky Carroll, star of the hit television series NCIS, has hinted at the possible return of veteran character Special Agent Jethro Gibbs.

The long-running police procedural television series NCIS recently passed a significant milestone by airing 450 episodes. The drama series, which debuted in 2004, has captivated viewers by following the fictional team of special agents in their daily lives. Rocky Carroll, the show’s star, has teased fans that they “might see Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) again” after the character left the show at the end of season 19.

In a Q&A with TV Insider, the NCIS star discussed the show’s huge milestone of 20 seasons while also mentioning the possibility of ace Gibbs’ return.

When asked about the mentions of Gibbs in the crossover special, the actor replied by saying “we might see Gibbs again”.

“I think as long as this show is on the air, there will always be a little bit of a tease that we might see Gibbs again,” the star explained.

He went on to praise Gibbs, saying, “Gibbs is the moral compass. He’s the moral compass we’d all like to have.”

Carroll’s CBS acting career has spanned over 20 years, and he has appeared on numerous hit shows.

It wasn’t the actors’ first time working together on CBS, as they both appeared on the medical drama Chicago Hope, which premiered in 1995.

When asked about reuniting with Harmon and how he felt about playing Vance for so long, the actor mentioned his “great” relationship with Harmon and CBS.

“I’ve always had a great relationship with CBS,” he said. Mark Harmon and I have always had a great relationship.”

In addition, the actor joked that he was “Harmon-approved” to join the cast of NCIS in 2008.

“I knew that no matter what they thought or felt about me,” the actor recalled when he first met with former NCIS executive producer Shane Brennan.

“‘You know what, I know this guy,’ Harmon said. We worked together, we worked well together, I give you my approval’, it would never have happened.”

“So, I go to my grave saying that I was Harmon-approved,” he added. That helped me a lot in getting the job.”

Following Harmon’s departure from the cr1me-fighting series in the 19th season, there have been numerous references to the iconic character, most notably during the recent crossover special.

Timothy McGee (Sean Murray), who tried to rediscover his hobby of writing, made one reference to the central character.

McGee discussed a recent story in which one of the characters, Agent Tibbs, was clearly based on his former boss, mentioning that the real Gibbs was currently in Alaska.

Delilah McGee (Margo Harshman), McGee’s wife, who also appeared in the episode, confirmed this, saying: “You haven’t written anything since Gibbs left for Alaska. Gibbs is not what distinguishes you.”

The series’ autumn finale aired on December 5, 2018, and it went on hiatus for the month before returning to screens on January 2, 2023.

Fans will have to wait and see if Gibbs returns to the investigative series in the future.

Meanwhile, fans are hoping for a return for Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), though nothing has been confirmed at the time of writing.
