NCIS, CBS’ long-running drama, will return to the airwaves in September for its 20th season. Fans have been debating the show’s credits in anticipation of its return, and they believe Gary Cole will be the first to be recognized.
Gary Cole plays Alden Parker, a Senior FBI agent who was introduced in season 19 to lead the agents of the Naval Cr1minal Investigative Service’s Major Case Response Team.
Alden had been hired to take over for the beloved Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), who had led the team since the pilot episode in 2003.
The agents were followed as they investigated cr1minal cases in the procedural drama.
The show also delves into the characters’ personal lives, as their work frequently interfered with their personal lives.
As NCIS prepares to return in September, fans believe Gary Cole will be the first star to be recognized.
Reddit user yoderbryan asked on the show’s fan page, “Who do you think will be credited first on NCIS season 20, Sean Murray or Gary Cole?”
Many people agreed that Gary would be the first to go after his character was introduced to replace Gibbs and lead the team.
“Definitely Gary Cole!” said user Borellis. They brought Cole on to save the show from cancellation, I’m afraid.”
“I’m betting it’s Cole,” said another fan, MonkGlock. While I like McGee / Sean Murray, he’s not a ‘top billed cast’ type and, unfortunately, he wouldn’t be able to carry the show as the lead.
“Because Cole is the leader and the bigger name, he will most likely be the first one in the opening sequence,” Johnlusher agreed.
“I’m curious to see if Mark Harmon appears at all in the opening.”
Although Gibbs resigned as leader and decided to relocate to Alaska in the episode Great Wide Open, the actor was still credited after his departure.
Fans who didn’t believe Gibbs had truly left took it as a sign of his possible return.
Actors who leave shows are usually immediately removed from the credits, but this was not the case for Gibbs.
Viewers remained hopeful because he had briefly left in season four, but he did not appear after 17 episodes.
Although the showrunners have yet to address this with fans, there could be a variety of reasons why the actor was kept in the credits.
One of the main reasons Mark Harmon could have remained credited was his role as executive producer behind the scenes.
It could also be due to contractual obligations; since the actor left in the middle of the season, perhaps executives agreed he would be credited until the end of the season.
Fans have also speculated that it was a way for the showrunners to honor Mark for his 18-year contribution.
In terms of Season 10, fans will have to wait and see if Gary will be the first star to be recognized and if Mark will remain on the list.
