After 5 seasons apart, Ziva and Tony’s “will-they-won’t-they” relationship was finally resolved when they were reunited in season 17 of NCIS.
The much-anticipated Ziva and Tony NCIS reunion almost happened in season 17 of the show. However, much to the dismay of fans, there was nothing to see on the show that season – or in the seasons that followed. Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) was an Israeli operative who joined the NCIS team as a liaison officer after Caitlin Todd d1ed at the end of season 2. However, Tony DiNozzo’s (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva’s relationship did not begin until the eighth episode of the season, when they went undercover as a couple. This sparked their will-they-won’t-they romance, dubbed “Tiva” by fans.
After years of speculation, NCIS season 17 hinted at the two’s future together, which fans have been waiting for. This almost didn’t happen, however, because Ziva d1ed at the end of Season 13. Ziva was presumed d3ad in a mortar explosion orchestrated by Sahar Azam in the NCIS season 13 finale. Despite the fact that she was later discovered to be alive, Tony was unaware for a long time, even after their goodbye kiss. NCIS season 17 revealed how the two reconnected and what they’re doing now that de Pablo and Weatherly have both left the long-running series.

Tony discovered the two had a daughter together after Ziva faked her d3ath in NCIS season 13, episode 23, “D3ath Letter,” and left the team to care for her. Tony, who was living with their daughter in Paris at the time, finally decided it was safe to reunite with Ziva after the d3ath of Sahar Azam, the woman sent to k1ll her. The reunion was mentioned in a letter in which Tony and Ziva were living in Paris and raising their daughter, Tali, together. Both were able to settle down and return to some semblance of normalcy in their lives. The romance that fans had been waiting for for 15 seasons finally arrived, but no one could see the Ziva and Tony NCIS reunion on the show itself.
Why Did Ziva Pretend to D1e in NCIS?
Ziva faked her d3ath and left NCIS in order to keep her family safe. The bomb that exploded at her father’s farmhouse was intended for her. To protect her daughter, she pretended to d1e in order to distract her att4cker. This was revealed during NCIS season 17 when Bishop returned to Ziva’s old office and discovered Odette. Odette confronted Bishop after recognizing the fabric from Ziva’s coat, and Odette spilled the beans. Adam tried to stop Ziva from leaving once they realized Sahar was going after Gibbs next, but Ziva faked her d3ath to prioritize her family.
While that may be why the character left the show after five seasons, it is not the reason actress Cote de Pablo left. According to reports, De Pablo felt Ziva’s character had been cheated out of a good storyline, and she left NCIS due to creative differences. During a Q&A session, de Pablo stated:
“Unfortunately, due to political reasons and scripts that were not good enough, I chose not to [return to NCIS].” Look at how much I adore this character! I worked on [Ziva] for eight years, and when I felt she wasn’t being treated with the respect she deserved, I told them. “They were going to send [Ziva] back to Israel and make her an unfortunate, miserable woman.”
Will Tony and Ziva ever appear together again on NCIS?
Despite the fact that it occurred off-screen, the Ziva and Tony NCIS ending was the happy one that many fans had hoped for since their romance blossomed. However, with NCIS still on the air and doing well, could the two characters ever reunite on the screen, giving fans that one glimpse of the happy family that many have wished for for so long? It appears that it may finally happen. While de Pablo left the show because she was dissatisfied with the Ziva storyline production, Michael Weatherly left for a different reason. He desired to try something new.
Weatherly accomplished this when he took on the lead role in the series Bull. However, now that the show has concluded after six seasons, the actor may find time in his schedule to make a brief return to the show that made him famous. A fan asked on Twitter if they could see Tony and Ziva together on NCIS, and the actor responded, writing, “Stay tuned… for this might be an interesting year for such “moments”!” That being said, the Ziva and Tony NCIS reunion that fans have been wishing for since their final kiss may finally become a reality for the popular duo.
