Michael Weatherly Reveals He Improvised Iconic NCIS Scene That Made It Into a CBS Commercial

Michael Weatherly, best known for his role as Tony DiNozzo on NCIS, recently shared a behind-the-scenes revelation about one of his most memorable scenes. The actor, who started his career with a small role on The Cosby Show and later appeared in Significant Others, Charmed, and Dark Angel, joined NCIS in 2003 and stayed for 13 seasons before departing in 2016.

Weatherly’s portrayal of DiNozzo left such an indelible impression that he made a special cameo in NCIS Season 21 in 2024 to honor the late David McCallum, who died in 2023. Fans were ecstatic when it was announced that he would rejoin with Cote de Pablo (Ziva David) in a new spin-off series, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, which will premiere on Paramount+.

During an appearance on the Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch podcast with de Pablo, Weatherly reflected on the pivotal Season 7 episode, Truth or Consequences. The storyline involved Tony, Gibbs (Mark Harmon), and McGee (Sean Murray) risking their lives to rescue Ziva from a Somali prison camp.

Weatherly revealed that his comments during the interrogation scene were largely improvised while under the influence of “truth serum”. “I knew I was scared to death,” Weatherly said. “But I also knew Gibbs was someplace, like an angel protecting me. So I had the confidence of someone thinking, “Do whatever you want with me.” “It will not end well for you.”

In a moment of quick thinking, Weatherly delivered a now-iconic line after being struck: “Can I get a glass of chardonnay? Because that would go so well with the taste of blood I have in my mouth.” His ad-lib was so effective that it became part of the official promotional trailer for Season 7.

This anecdote highlights Weatherly’s knack for bringing humor and depth to his character, solidifying his legacy as one of NCIS’s most beloved stars. Fans eagerly await his return in the highly anticipated spin-off.
