‘Baywatch’ star Michael Newman Dead at 68 After Long Battle with Parkinson’s Disease

Michael Newman, well known for his role as lifeguard Mike “Newmie” Newman on Baywatch, died at the age of 68 after an 18-year struggle with Parkinson’s disease. His close friend, Matt Felker, revealed that Newman died on Sunday from cardiac issues while surrounded by family and friends.

Newman, a real-life lifeguard, appeared in 150 episodes of the iconic show, second only to David Hasselhoff. While starring on Baywatch, he also worked as a full-time firefighter, retiring after 25 years of service. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2006 at age 50.

In the Hulu docuseries After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, Newman discussed how the condition impacted his life, stating it allowed him to ponder and gain insight. Despite his difficulties, Newman remained committed to cherishing time with loved ones, abiding by the credo “It’s not a run-through.”

Newman retired from acting to raise funds for Parkinson’s research through the Michael J. Fox Foundation. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sarah, their children Chris and Emily, and their granddaughter, Charlie.
