Will Mark Harmon Return to the Main ‘NCIS’ Series in the Future?

“NCIS” has been missing Jethro Gibbs for three seasons, following Mark Harmon’s departure in Season 19. Harmon will return to the NCIS universe this autumn as the narrator of “NCIS: Origins,” a new CBS series about a young Gibbs joining NCIS. His departure on “NCIS” was left open-ended, raising questions regarding his comeback.

During this year’s TCA summer press tour (via TV Line), Harmon reflected on his departure, stating it wasn’t a decision to leave but rather “the right timing to push away a little bit.” He was pleased with how his character was written out, saying, “I was thrilled with the storyline they came up with and how they handled the character.” Harmon emphasized that the team moved on without Gibbs, noting, “and the show continued on.”

Will Gibbs Ever Return to ‘NCIS’?

Since Gibbs left the squad, “NCIS” has continued on without him, providing only occasional information on his location. The most recent was a card sent to McGee from Alaska including a portrait of Gibbs, McGee, and Ducky from David McCallum’s final episode. Gibbs did not return for the 1000th episode celebration.

When asked if Gibbs would ever return, Harmon admitted, “I’ve always let the writers do what they want to do.” As “NCIS” enters its 22nd season this fall, the fourth year without Gibbs, Harmon mentioned he hasn’t been contacted to reprise his role, stating, “Directly, like a phone call…? Not that I’m aware of.”

Regarding a possible series finale comeback, Harmon stated, “I’m not sure. It’s about feeling fulfilled or complete in your role.
