Mark Harmon, well known for his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS, is expanding his involvement with the franchise. While his on-screen career has ended, he will soon return as the narrator for the prequel series NCIS: Origins, which will focus on Gibbs and Mike Franks’ early adventures.
Initially skeptical of his engagement, Harmon discovered a new opportunity to recognize his real-life connections to the NCIS community through books.
Collaborating with NCIS technical advisor Leon Carroll Jr., Harmon has co-authored books exploring historical cases connected to the real-life agency. Their first book, Ghosts of Honolulu: A Japanese Spy, a Japanese Spy Hunter, and the Untold Story of Pearl Harbor, delves into the story of Douglas Wada, the first Japanese American NIS agent. Released in November 2023, the book was born out of Harmon’s desire to share authentic NCIS stories.
“When Harper Select approached me about writing a book about the show, I initially declined,” Harmon told the newspaper. “But I was interested in telling the true stories of NCIS, the cases that inspired the series. Leon Carroll has been my go-to for 20 years, ensuring that we portray things appropriately.”
This creative venture stems from Harmon’s early understanding of the show’s roots. While NCIS evolved into a murd3r-solving procedural featuring fan-favorites like David McCallum (Ducky) and Pauley Perrette (Abby), the original concept was based on real NCIS cases. Harmon’s partnership with Carroll continues this vision, with their second book, Ghosts of Panama: A Strongman Out of Control, A Murd3red Marine, and the Special Agents Caught in the Middle of an Invasion, now available. The pair hopes to turn the series into an enduring tribute to the agency’s legacy.
