Mark Harmon has made a surprising return as Gibbs in NCIS: Origins, the new prequel series that explores the early years of the iconic character. While it was known he’d be involved as an executive producer, fans were thrilled to see him reprise his role on screen in the premiere.
The show premiered with two episodes in which Harmon narrates Gibbs’ trip and shares memories from his past. Austin Stowell stars as Young Gibbs in 1991, while Harmon appears as the older Gibbs, contemplating by a campfire in Alaska.
Harmon’s son, Sean Harmon, plays a significant role behind the scenes in bringing NCIS: Origins to life. Fans are hopeful this isn’t the last we’ll see of Gibbs, and his return has reignited excitement in the NCIS universe.

Mark Harmon and his son, Sean Harmon, recently spoke about NCIS: Origins, the new addition to the NCIS franchise. “The idea was Sean’s, and it just made sense that there was a new story to tell,” Mark shared with Forbes. Sean, who previously played a young Gibbs in flashbacks, seemed a natural choice to reprise the role. Sean Harmon Discusses Why He’s No Longer Playing Young Gibbs
Sean Harmon expressed his feelings about no longer portraying Young Gibbs, saying, “It’s been an unbelievable joy to play a role my father created, and it’s something I’ll always cherish. But, to be honest, it was not something I intended to pursue professionally.
Excited about new opportunities, he added, “I have a lot of stories to tell and am thrilled to step into an executive producing role, working with my dad in a new way.”
While he may return for a guest spot if a flashback arises, the role could shift to Austin Stowell if NCIS: Origins takes off.
