Mark Harmon Discusses Possible NCIS Return Following Young Gibbs Prequel: ‘I’ve Had That Question Asked A Lot’

Mark Harmon has addressed the possibility of his return to NCIS following the upcoming NCIS: Origins prequel. Harmon, who left the role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS season 19, will narrate the prequel but has no current plans to reprise his role in the main show. Speaking to TVLine during CBS’ TCA Summer Press Tour, Harmon stated:

It was more about knowing when to back off a little than it was about making the decision to go. The way they handled the character and the plot they came up with thrilled me. And the program went on. I get asked that all the time.I’ve never interfered with the writers’ creative endeavors. directly, as in over the phone…? Not that I know of, however. I’m not sure [whether I’ll return for the last episode of the show]. He may not be standing in the stream, in my opinion.

Why Gibbs Still Needs To Return To the Main NCIS Show

Gibbs’ return to the main NCIS show is still highly anticipated. In November 2023, Mark Harmon confirmed his continued involvement in the NCIS universe, even though NCIS: Origins wasn’t announced until January 2024. Though not appearing in the prequel, his ongoing connection makes it easier for CBS to bring him back. A storyline linking NCIS: Origins with the main show could provide additional motivation.

Despite opportunities such as Ducky’s homage and NCIS’ 1000th episode in Season 21, Gibbs has yet to make an appearance. Producers emphasize that any return must be big, ruling out brief cameos. Harmon, who co-produced NCIS: Origins, recognizes the significance of a return to the main series, particularly for future milestone events. His comeback would be an appropriate gesture to honor the series and its supporters.

  1. I think that Mark could come back as the director of NCIS, he wouldn’t be running around but he would still be the father figure for the team, even if it was for one more session, we will see the NCIS ORIGINS, we’ ve seen Mark through the years as the boss, and now he is getting older even though he said he didn’t want to be director of NCIS, maybe it’s time to build up to his retirement,
