Mark Harmon’s decision to step down as Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS nearly ended the long-running series. After his last full appearance in 2021, there were serious discussions about canceling the show.
Gary Cole, who succeeded Harmon as Agent Alden Parker, revealed on the Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch podcast that the idea of wrapping up the series was considered between seasons 18 and 19.
The showrunners eventually created a smooth transfer, with Harmon appearing in early season 19 episodes to assist incorporate Parker’s role. Cole complimented the strategy for avoiding a sudden replacement and allowing the two characters to share screen time and solve cases together.
Though Harmon retired from acting on NCIS, he remains closely involved as an executive producer and recently supported the franchise’s new spin-off, NCIS: Origins, exploring Gibbs’ early career.
While some appreciate his continued guidance, insiders say his involvement in casting and plotlines is occasionally met with frustration by younger team members who wish he’d step back.
Despite the initial uncertainty, NCIS remains a fan favorite, proving the show’s resilience even after the departure of its iconic lead.
