Mark Harmon fans are thrilled as his iconic NCIS character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, takes center stage in the new spin-off NCIS: Origins, which dives into Gibbs’ past. Although Mark isn’t starring in the show, he’s deeply involved, serving as both producer and narrator.
To celebrate the series launch, a throwback photo of Mark from the ’80s has surfaced, showing him shirtless on a beach in Beverly Hills, looking relaxed and worlds away from his gritty, on-screen alter ego.
In a recent CBS interview, Mark expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming show, adding, “This is a chance to really dig into it.” NCIS: Origins follows a younger Gibbs, played by Austin Stowell, as he deals with the loss of his wife and child-a defining catastrophe in his life.
Sean Harmon, Mark’s son who previously played a young Gibbs, sees this as an excellent opportunity to investigate the development of a leader. “Gibbs is no exception to being ‘forged’ into a leader,” Sean told TV Insider, citing the impact of people around him.
Mark left NCIS in 2021 during Season 19, explaining later that he felt ready for “fresh and challenging” projects. Now, in his downtime, he enjoys a private life with his wife, Pam Dawber, and their two sons, Sean and Ty. The family values privacy and keeps a low profile, with no presence on social media.
