When Vance’s wife died, a friend sent him the poem, according to Vance. There’s a scene in the NCIS offices where he reads it aloud, intercut with different instances of the characters expressing their grief.
Merrit Malloy wrote the poem “Epitaph.” It investigates death as a stripping away of everything except love, and how death reduces us to nothing more than what others admire about us.
While our bodies die, our memories keep us alive. The poem begins with the act of giving things away, but continuing to live on in the eyes of our loved ones. Not as mental memories, but as physical reminders.
We can remember those who have left us by letting go and loving others completely and unconditionally.
In terms of style, this poem isn’t particularly noteworthy. It employs simple language and images, but its impact on its readers is astounding. In those few lines and stanzas, it packs a powerful punch. The poem was so powerful at the time that “NCIS” fans praised the writers on Twitter and Reddit.
Two even stated that they planned to read the poem at the upcoming memorials for their loved ones.
That is the kind of effect poetry can have on a community. It brought the characters together to mourn, and it also brought together “NCIS” fans.

‘NCIS’ Will Be Renewed for a 20th Season?
While we’re all bonding over this heartbreaking “NCIS” scene, I suppose it’s a good time to ask: will there be a season 20? There hasn’t been any word, but the current season isn’t over yet. As a result, we may have more time to wait for renewal.
In any case, CBS usually waits until the last minute to announce renewals, as they did with “CSI: Vegas.” But I’m hoping they break with tradition for what is arguably their most successful franchise.
Furthermore, the ratings have remained consistent, with an average of 7.3 million viewers since the last Gibbs episode. That means “NCIS” will almost certainly be renewed unless the ratings plummet dramatically in the final episodes.
Which I don’t predict, so I believe we’re safe. Hopefully, no one else leaves before the end of the season, or else viewership will plummet. It’s clear that some people stopped watching after Mark Harmon’s departure, but the flagship hasn’t gone away. We’re looking forward to Season 20 because the ratings are still high.
