The Tragic Story of ‘Blue Bloods’ star Len Cariou’s Wife

Len Cariou, the renowned Canadian actor and stage director, is best known for his iconic roles on Broadway, including his Tony Award-winning performance in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. In recent years, he’s gained further recognition for portraying Henry Reagan, the retired NYPD Police Commissioner, in the popular TV series Blue Bloods. However, behind his celebrated career lies a beautiful and emotional love story with his wife, Heather Summerhayes, marked by personal tragedy.

Len and Heather married on October 25, 1986, although their relationship arose from a profound bond formed through shared grief. Heather, a writer and campaigner, suffered a life-changing loss early on. Pam, her younger sister, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of six and was given only a few months to live.

Despite the dismal prediction, Pam lived to the age of 26, thanks to innovative medicines and Heather’s family’s efforts in establishing the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Heather was very moved by Pam’s brave battle and tragic death, and she resolved to tell her sister’s tale.

Heather fulfilled this promise by writing 65 Roses: A Sister’s Memoir, a poignant account of their lives growing up together, Pam’s struggle with illness, and the emotional journey of their family. Although Pam died in her twenties, her spirit and final request to Heather-to share their story-remained a driving force for Heather. It took her over two decades to complete the book, during which she found solace and support in Len.

Heather met Len through mutual acquaintances while he was playing at the Stratford Festival. Heather had recently lost her sister and ended her marriage, while Len had just ended his relationship with actress Glenn Close. Despite her initial reservations about dating, Len’s charisma won her over. Their connection got closer, and when Heather confided in him about her difficulties in writing Pam’s memoir, Len was very supportive. He purchased her a typewriter and urged her to fulfill her vow.

The couple has remained together for over three decades, standing by each other through the highs and lows of their personal and professional lives. While Len Cariou’s career continues to thrive, Heather’s advocacy and writing remain a testament to her love for her sister and her strength in the face of loss. Together, they share a love story that’s as inspiring as it is emotional.
