Rita Carrey, comedian Jim Carrey’s sister and a Canadian singer and artist, died quietly on November 14, 2024, surrounded by family and friends. Her husband, Alex, broke the devastating news the next day in a poignant Facebook post.
“It is with a heavy heart and my deepest sadness that Rita passed away peacefully and quietly,” he wrote. Her cause of death was not disclosed.
Rita welcomed her brother’s celebrity with levity, remarking on the chat show What She Said, “They always go, ‘Jim Carrey’s sister.'” So my moniker is now JCS – Jesus Christ Superstar – because I never hear, ‘Oh, you’re Rita.'”
She was a radio show co-host and producer of The Peet & Reet Show and pursued her own path in entertainment. Rita and Alex, together for 16 years, had married in July 2023 in her dream outdoor wedding.
Her husband’s eulogy emphasized their closeness, stating, “She filled everyone’s heart with joy…” Goodbye, my love. Good-bye, dear friend. “Until we meet again.”
A candlelight vigil to honor her memory will be held on December 7 in Ontario, Canada.
Rita had fondly shared anecdotes about her famous brother, recalling how their mother warned young Jim about his exaggerated facial expressions, joking that he would “see the devil” if he kept practicing them.
