Gibbs vs. DiNozzo: ‘NCIS’ Executives Consider Michael Weatherly’s Return After Mark Harmon Refuses To Leave Retirement

While dithering fence-sitter Mark Harmon has been hemming and hawing about returning to NCIS, Michael Weatherly has shoved him out of the way and is eagerly anticipating his return.

The hunky actor played Special Agent Tony DiNozzo on the long-running hit series before leaving in 2016 to star in the legal drama Bull as trial science expert Dr. Jason Bull.

However, with Bull being canceled after six seasons, NCIS fans are hoping for Weatherly’s return — and show executives believe it would be cr1minal not to bring him back!

“Michael is available now, and he’s made it known that he’d like to return to his former show,” an insider revealed.

“His coworkers were understandably disappointed when he left NCIS at the end of season 13. They’re hoping to get him back now, especially the bosses, who want to add to the hunk lineup! “the source explained.

“This could be a real slap in the face for Harmon, who retired last year but has been reconsidering his decision,” sources said.

“Mark’s been teasing them about coming back for months,” one pal revealed. “He’s bored at home but refuses to leave. As a result, the response is, “Let’s get Michael!” Even before Bull ended, Michael teased a return on social media.

“That won’t sit well with Mark, but it’s entirely his fault. He’s kept them on the line the entire time.

“He made his bed; now he must sleep in it!”

After playing his beloved character since September 2003, Mark left NCIS at the start of season 19. In August, he talked about his departure and the future of his character.

“What has always drawn me here is the character I play and keeping it fresh and challenging,” the actor explained to Entertainment Tonight. “This character has chosen the path that it has. I thought it was honest and acceptable… I’m not done working. As far as I know, the character resides in Alaska.”

Last year, NCIS’ executive producer teased a possible return for Gibbs, but nothing came of it.

“As an executive producer and dear friend, Mark remains an integral part of the show’s fabric,” he said in October 2021. “Staying true to our characters has always been our north star, and that truth has always guided the stories we tell and where those characters go.” So, in terms of Gibbs’ future, as longtime fans of the show may have noticed over the years… never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out.”
