David Lynch, Visionary Filmmaker and ‘Twin Peaks’ Creator, Dead at 78

David Lynch, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Drive, has passed away at 78. His family confirmed the news via social media, asking for privacy and quoting Lynch’s own optimistic mantra: “Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.”

Lynch had been battling emphysema since 2020, but the family did not disclose the cause of death. In recent interviews, he described the difficulties of living with the illness, adding, “It’s like walking around with a plastic bag over your head.”

Born in 1946 in Missoula, Montana, Lynch began his filmmaking career in the 1960s. His debut feature, Eraserhead (1977), became a cult classic, followed by The Elephant Man (1980), which earned eight Oscar nominations, including Best Director. Though his 1984 adaptation of Dune struggled at the box office, Lynch’s 1990 creation of Twin Peaks, co-written with Mark Frost, became a cultural phenomenon. The show’s 2017 revival, Twin Peaks: The Return, further cemented his legacy.

Lynch’s illustrious career included four Oscar nominations, two César Awards, and Cannes’ Palme d’Or. He married four times and has four children, including filmmaker Jennifer Lynch.

Lynch’s final years were marked by health struggles and his recent evacuation from his Los Angeles home due to wildfires. Despite these challenges, his family said he remained optimistic, always focused on the beauty of life.
