David Harris, 75, died after a battle with cancer. He was best remembered for his performance as Cochise in the 1979 cult film The Warriors. His daughter, Davina Harris, verified that he died at home in New York City.
Although The Warriors initially struggled at the box office, it later garnered a global fanbase and holds an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In a 2019 interview, Harris reflected on the film’s enduring legacy, stating, “It wasn’t a typical gang movie… It was futuristic. It was like The Seven Samurai.” He often noted the film’s impact on his career, recalling how fans recognized him around the world.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, who just recognized Harris’ efforts to The Warriors, paid tribute on Instagram, expressing his regret at Harris’ death and thanks for their recent time together.
In addition to his iconic role in The Warriors, Harris appeared in films such as Brubaker (1980) and A Soldier’s Story (1984), and made guest appearances on popular TV shows including Law & Order and ER. He was born in June 1949 and found his passion for acting at the High School of Performing Arts in New York.
Harris is survived by his mother, three siblings, and two grandchildren.
