NCIS fans are hoping Tony DiNozzo will return to the show in Season 20 thanks to a cryptic Instagram post. And, while we make no promises, it appears that they may get their wish.
With the departure of Mark Harmon’s Leroy Gibbs, the CBS drama had a difficult year. Fans have never lamented a show’s end with such fervor in its nearly two decades on the air.
Michael Weatherly, who played DiNozzo, left the show in 2013. While his decision did not have the same impact on fans as Harmon’s, he did break thousands of hearts. So when his former co-star Sean Murray posted a picture of his character, Timothy McGee, with DiNozzo at random, the NCIS fanbase erupted.
Murray simply captioned the photo “throwback,” but the unprompted blast felt like a promo or tease to Murray’s 200K followers.
“Wait, does (sic) this mean…. This duo is returning?” one fan wondered.
“I’m hoping to see Very Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo on the premiere!!!” wrote another.
To fuel the speculation, the official NCIS page stated that it enjoys “a good throwback.” As the series nears its fall premiere, fans are waiting with bated breath to see if the actor will return for a surprise cameo or two. Is it possible, however, that he could? Yes.
When ‘NCIS’ returns in September, fans will find out if DiNozzo is coming out of retirement.
Weatherly left on good terms at the end of Season 13. While he had plenty of screen time as a supporting character on NCIS, he landed a lead role on Bull. The actor worked on the show for six years before CBS canceled it this year. And, as far as we know, he has no new projects lined up. As a result, his schedule is completely open.
Writing DiNozzo back into the story would make the appearance even more plausible. DiNozzo retired in order to devote his life to his family. Getting the agent back to work would not require much ingenuity.
As of now, speculation about the return of the “Very Special Agent” is all that exists. Aside from the post, neither CBS, the series, nor the actors have done anything to pique our interest. They haven’t, however, worked to dispel the rumors.
With NCIS approaching its 20th season, it’s likely that the writers are looking for unique ways to commemorate the occasion. And the return of DiNozzo would certainly be a reason to do so. However, it appears that we will not have any answers until the series returns on CBS on Monday, September 19.
