Despite its consistent high viewership, CBS plans to cancel “Blue Bloods” after its 14th season. The procedural drama was the #4 most-watched returning drama and the #8 most-watched series overall for the 2023-2024 season, with 8.4 million viewers. Its success in the 10 o’clock hour makes the network’s decision puzzling for fans.
Viewership is predicted to increase as “Blue Bloods” airs the second half of its final season beginning in October 2024, particularly building up to the season finale in December 2024. However, CBS seems adamant on ending the series. Despite appreciating the show’s success and fondness for its actors and staff, CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach highlighted the importance of refreshing the schedule.
With “Blue Bloods” ending, CBS’s senior scripted series will be reduced to just “NCIS,” which continues beyond Fall 2024. The cancellation aligns with CBS’s strategy to manage expenses and possibly make way for new shows like “Sheriff Country,” a spin-off of “Fire Country,” set for the 2025-2026 TV year.
Though the end of “Blue Bloods” signals the end of a very successful era, the show’s incredible run and high viewership will be remembered.
