Donnie Wahlberg is optimistic about the future of CBS’ “Blue Bloods.” Despite the cast and producers agreeing to a 25 percent pay cut to secure a 14th season, Wahlberg believes the show has a bright future.
“I’m an optimist,” the New Kids on the Block singer told Us Weekly. “I approach each episode as it comes. It’s why I’ve enjoyed the show for the past 13 years.”
Wahlberg, 53, portrays Detective Danny Reagan in the series, which chronicles the Reagan family, many of whom work for the NYPD under Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck). Bridget Moynahan and Will Estes star as Danny’s siblings, while Len Cariou plays the family patriarch. The show premiered in September 2012.
Hoping for “Blue Bloods” to match the longevity of “Law and Order: SVU,” Wahlberg admires how Ice-T and Mariska Hargitay have maintained their roles for years. He emphasizes staying present in each episode rather than worrying about future seasons.
Wahlberg, who is also stepfather to his wife Jenny McCarthy’s 20-year-old son Evan, is not opposed to a “Blue Bloods” spinoff. He joked about a potential storyline in which his and Moynahan’s characters became private investigators in Hawaii, but it was too similar to Selleck’s “Magnum, P.I.”
While there are no spinoffs in the works, Wahlberg is busy with the new season of “Very Scary People,” which examines history’s most notorious cr1minals. Despite enjoying roles where he catches bad guys, Wahlberg isn’t keen on playing a serial k1ller, finding the material too dark.
While watching “Very Scary People” with McCarthy, Wahlberg observes the show’s impact. “It encourages me to investigate further…” Double-check that I have locked the door here,” he said. McCarthy’s perspective allowed him to see the show’s weighty subject matter differently.
