Scott L. Schwartz, the wrestler-turned-actor best known for his role as Bruiser in the Ocean’s Eleven franchise, passed away at 65. His wife, Misty, confirmed he died of congestive heart failure on Nov. 26 at his Covington, La., home.
“Most people knew Scott from the movies, but those close to him knew his joy for life, his love for food and travel, and his compassion,” Misty told me. She cited his efforts visiting children with cancer in hospitals as evidence of his great heart.
George Clooney, who starred alongside Schwartz in Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve, and Ocean’s Thirteen, paid tribute, saying, “I’m sorry to hear that Scott is gone. He was a gentle soul and will be dearly missed.”
Schwartz’s career included appearances in The Scorpion King, Starsky & Hutch, The Mentalist, Castle, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Actor Rick Zahn also honored him, describing Schwartz as a devoted friend and community supporter who brought light into many lives.
Schwartz had a successful professional wrestling career in the 1970s and 1980s, going by names such as “The Israeli Commando” and “Igor the Giant.” He retired in 1999 to focus on acting, occasionally portraying his wrestling image on movies.
Schwartz is survived by his wife Misty, children Angela and Adam, and other family members.
