NCIS’ Latest Episode Highlights Why CBS Should Dive Deeper Into McGee’s Personal Story

I’ve been watching NCIS since I saw the Season 3 episode “Bait” on USA in 2008. While I’m still five years away from seeing the complete series, I’ve seen previous episodes and witnessed Sean Murray’s Timothy McGee grow from a Season 1 “probie” to a top-billed lead with the most appearances in the franchise, surpassing the late David McCallum.

After the most recent episode, “Hardboiled,” I wish NCIS would go deeper into McGee’s life as a father.

What Happened With McGee And Jimmy This Week

This week’s NCIS episode, “Hardboiled,” featured a compelling case involving the murd3r of the head of Naval Research’s Warfare and Weapons division, whose hypersonic missile work led to an unexpected twist-a vacuum cleaner invention. Alongside this case, a subplot saw Timothy McGee and Jimmy Palmer grappling with their roles as referees for a local kids’ soccer league.

While they did not participate on the field, McGee and Jimmy received criticism for a contentious championship game call. A computer simulation later demonstrated that their choice was incorrect. Jimmy first wanted to keep this private, fearing future scrutiny, but he eventually decided to accept responsibility. However, McGee quit ahead of time, prioritizing Jimmy’s enthusiasm for officiating and avoiding more controversy with his disappointed parents.

NCIS Should Show McGee With His Kids

The soccer subplot brought McGee’s family life to mind. While we often hear about Tim and Delilah raising their twins, John and Morgan, they’ve never been shown onscreen since their birth in Season 15. Now seven years old, the twins remain absent, despite mentions of McGee’s parenting.

It is time for NCIS to “show, not tell.” Introducing the twins, even briefly, would enrich McGee’s character and provide heartfelt family scenes. If Jimmy Palmer’s daughter Victoria could have a plot, McGee’s children deserve the same. Even if this does not happen in Season 22, the authors should plan to include John and Morgan in future seasons, possibly with Margo Harshman returning as Delilah. A look at McGee’s family life would lend a fresh, human element to the show.

New episodes of NCIS air Mondays at 9 PM ET on CBS. NCIS: Sydney returns January 31, and NCIS: Tony & Ziva is expected in 2025 on Paramount+.
