Leroy Jethro Gibbs could return to NCIS one day, but Mark Harmon isn’t making any promises just yet.
As NCIS gears up for its 22nd season and two spinoffs, including NCIS: Origins-which explores a younger version of Gibbs-fans remain eager for the original Gibbs to make a comeback. While the new spinoff is set to revisit the character’s early days, many viewers are holding out hope for Harmon’s return, especially if the series eventually heads toward its finale.
Harmon, who played Gibbs for years, has indicated interest in repeating his character, although no official offers have been made. “I’ve always let the writers do what they want to do,” he told me. “Directly, as in a phone call…?” “Not that I am aware of.”
As an executive producer of NCIS: Origins, Harmon remains closely tied to the franchise. This has fueled speculation that Gibbs might step out of retirement to assist the Major Case Response Team (MCRT) in the future.
Though the show has excelled under Alden Parker’s direction, Gibbs’ return would surely be a watershed moment for the series. Fans are hoping to see Harmon’s legendary character return on film again, whether in a cameo or as part of a larger storyline.
