Orlando Hotelier and Philanthropist ‘Harris Rosen’ Dies at 85

Harris Rosen, the founder of Rosen Hotels & Resorts and a beloved figure in the Orlando community, passed away at 85, surrounded by family. Known as much for his charitable heart as for his business acumen, Rosen leaves behind three children and a legacy of generosity.

Vice President Frank Santos called Rosen “an angel to so many here on earth,” emphasizing his commitment to underserved communities, education, and wellness.

Born in New York, Rosen graduated from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Management and served in the U.S. Army before embarking on a storied hospitality career. After working at prestigious hotels and Disney, where he helped design iconic resorts like the Contemporary and Polynesian, Rosen left to purchase a Quality Inn on Orlando’s International Drive in 1974.

Rosen established a hospitality empire around that single property, which includes the AAA four-diamond-rated Rosen Shingle Creek. He also made major philanthropic donations, most notably contributing property and $10 million to build the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida, which is now recognized as the country’s top hospitality curriculum.

American Hotel & Lodging Association CEO Rosanna Maietta honored Rosen as “an inspirational figure” whose impact on the industry and community will endure for generations.

Rosen’s family will hold a private celebration of his life. His generosity and passion will long be remembered.
