NCIS Sean Murray Was Never Meant To Be On The Show

Agent Timothy McGee has become one of the most beloved characters on NCIS. For fans, imagining the show without him is nearly impossible. But what if we told you McGee wasn’t originally intended to be a main character?

Sean Murray’s journey to becoming the longest-running full-time cast member on the show is a tale of unexpected opportunities and a twist of fate.

A Humble Beginning

McGee first appeared in the season one episode Sub Rosa in 2003, when he was intended to be a minor character to lend humor to the otherwise intense cr1me thriller. His introduction, in which he stood awkwardly behind Tony DiNozzo and Gibbs wearing a surgical mask, gave fans a taste of the hilarious potential that would later characterize him. Despite being introduced as a one-time character, McGee returned as a guest star eight times during season one.

From Guest Star to Main Cast

In season two, Sean Murray officially joined the main cast. The decision to expand his role stemmed from an unusual production issue-Sub Rosa needed three extra minutes of footage, and Murray’s scenes helped fill the gap. Little did anyone know that this small opportunity would mark the start of a remarkable career on the show.

Showrunners instantly recognized McGee’s potential. His partnership with Tony DiNozzo as a “buddy-cop” combination, as well as his evolving connection with Gibbs, provided unique opportunities for character growth. McGee’s moral character and relatability struck a chord with spectators, cementing his spot on the squad.

The Longest-Running Cast Member

When Mark Harmon (Gibbs) departed from NCIS, Murray became the longest-running full-time cast member. Over the years, he’s described his experience as McGee as one of the “coolest” of his life. He even got to act alongside his real-life daughter, Cay Ryan Murray, who appeared in season 19 as a guest star.
