Mark Harmon Filmed New Footage for an NCIS Show – and It’s Not the Original

Mark Harmon is returning to NCIS, but not in the way fans of the flagship series might expect. Instead, Harmon will appear in NCIS: Origins, a new prequel series that follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs as he starts his career at the Naval Investigative Service in the early ’90s. While the story takes place over a decade before the events of NCIS, Harmon will still be involved.

As an executive producer, he will also narrate the show, which will purportedly chronicle Gibbs’ early life as it occurred in 1991. According to showrunner David J. North, Harmon’s debut will feature brief video of the elder Gibbs in the first episode, with the possibility of additional appearances.

In NCIS: Origins, actor Austin Stowell portrays young Gibbs as a more open character, not yet the reserved, hardened agent fans know. We’ll also see a young version of Mike Franks, Gibbs’s mentor. The official trailer teases a quick look at Harmon, though it’s unclear if it’s new or archived footage.

With Harmon’s presence, fans will have a recognizable face to guide them through Gibbs’ genesis tale. This may be a different perspective on his return, but for long-time fans, any return of Gibbs is welcome.
