In December 2022, Celine Dion revealed her diagnosis of a rare neurological disorder, stiff person syndrome, in an emotional video on Instagram. “I’ve always been an open book,” Dion shared, “but I wasn’t ready to say anything before. Recently, I’ve been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder called stiff person syndrome, which affects one in a million people.”
Dion described how the illness creates spasms that affect “every aspect” of her daily life, such as her ability to walk and utilize her vocal cords. “To reach you again, I have no choice but to prioritize my health at this time. I believe I’m on my way to recovery.”
Her upcoming Prime Video documentary, “I Am: Celine Dion,” delves deeper into her condition. In a newly released trailer, Dion is seen recording her 2022 message, with scenes of numerous medication bottles. “It’s not hard to do a show,” she says. “It’s hard to cancel a show. I’m working hard every day. But I have to admit, it’s been a struggle. I miss it so much; the people, I miss them. If I can’t run, I’ll walk. If I can’t walk, I’ll crawl. I won’t stop.”
Dion made a rare public appearance at the Grammys earlier this year, to a rapturous reception from fans. “Thank you, everyone! “I love you back,” she told the audience. “When I say I’m delighted to be here, I mean it from the heart. Those who have been fortunate enough to be present at the Grammy Awards should never take for granted the immense love and joy that music brings into our lives.”
Stiff person syndrome is a rare autoimmune neurological disorder characterized by muscle stiffness and spasms. Despite the challenges, Dion remains hopeful and determined to overcome this battle.
