David McCallum Worked Less on ‘NCIS’ To Spend More Time With His Family Before His Death

David McCallum, well known as Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard on NCIS, died at the age of 90. McCallum’s time on the hit show lasted over two decades, making him the longest-serving cast member and a key character since its beginning in 2003.

In recent years, McCallum’s appearances on NCIS became less frequent as he chose to prioritize spending time with his family, including his wife, children, six grandchildren, and their cherished cat, Nickie. Despite his reduced role, McCallum remained committed to the show, agreeing to appear in Season 16 while expressing his desire for more family time.

Recognizing the progression of his character, McCallum gently stepped down from his position as chief medical examiner in 2018 to make way for his assistant, played by Brian Dietzen. Despite considering leaving the program because he felt his character had become obsolete, McCallum was persuaded to remain as the show’s historian.

McCallum’s death has left a hole in the NCIS family, with executive producers hailing him as a scholar, gentleman, and consummate professional who never missed an opportunity to offer joy to those around him.
