Cr1me dramas have long been popular on television, but not all of them are created equal. Few have risen above the rest to become particularly beloved and recognized as some of the genre’s best. One of these titles is the occasionally dubious “NCIS,” which rose to prominence in the years following its small-screen debut in September 2003. This was most likely due to a variety of factors, including its high TV production value, gripping stories, and cast of engaging characters.
Throughout its run on television, “NCIS” has made stars of Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) and Tim McGee (Sean Murray). However, almost everyone on the cast list pales in comparison to Mark Harmon’s rule-following Leroy Gibbs, who most would agree is the program’s face. He bravely led the Naval Cr1minal Investigative Service from Season 1 to Season 19 while battling his own personal demons. As a result, by the end of his tenure, he was one of the show’s most popular and well-developed characters.
Given his involvement with “NCIS,” it’s no surprise that Gibbs is linked to a number of the show’s Easter eggs. This one, for example, is about the practicality of one of his suits.
Mark Harmon has a personal connection to Gibbs’ suit.
The episode “Everything Starts Somewhere” from Season 18 of “NCIS” explained how Gibbs and Donald “Ducky” Mallard (David McCallum) first met. During one of these flashback sequences, we see a rather dated tuxedo — as seen above — that actually has a lot of meaning. In a thread, Reddit user u/thard1ster pointed out that this suit is eerily similar to one worn by Mark Harmon in 1973, as evidenced by a photo of him with his father, Tom Harmon, and Hollywood icon John Wayne. Nature doesn’t get much more intricate than this when it comes to Easter eggs.
If you told a young Harmon that his suit would be mentioned in one of the most popular shows of all time, he probably wouldn’t believe you. Not only is such a claim devoid of reality on its own, but Harmon wasn’t even sure he’d make it as an actor back then. During an interview with Men’s Journal, he revealed that when he was younger, he worked as a shoe salesman and was unsure about his future in entertainment.
That all changed when he discussed careers with a man on a plane. Harmon remembered, “He was unhappy at work and was attempting to keep it for another 32 years. I went home, got in my car, drove out to my workplace, and gave my notice.”
Mark Harmon made it his mission to avoid a miserable life and instead succeed in Hollywood, and he was successful. His name is now known all over the world, and thanks to “NCIS,” so is the tuxedo he wore back then.
