This news is old and dates back to the 18th season of NCIS, but that relates to some recent events in the 19th season of NCIS!!!

CBS has confirmed that NCIS season 18 is on its way. But, in a new theory, Tony DiNozzo could return to the series to replace Gibbs.

On CBS, NCIS season 18 will see the return of Leroy Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) as the head of the cr1me-solving team. However, some fans have begun to speculate about whether the beloved character will retire soon and who will succeed him.

Will Tony DiNozzo Return to NCIS to Replace Gibbs When He Retires…?

Gibbs has led the NCIS team for 17 seasons, with another season already confirmed.

However, given his long tenure on the show, there have been rumors that he may retire at some point in the next few seasons.

This was sparked by the season 16 episode in which Gibbs discussed retirement with his therapist.

While Gibbs was adamant about never leaving his team, some viewers began to speculate about who might take over the beloved character’s mantle when the time came.

Fan BrotherAtxmic wrote on Reddit: “Mark Harmon is 68 now, and he has been on the show for 17 seasons.

“He will almost certainly leave in the near future.” “Who could be brought in to take his place?”

In response, there was a suggestion Abigail Borin (Diane Neal) could take the part after being a guest star in earlier seasons.

However, there was another name in the mix among showgoers – Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly).

Fans will recall that DiNozzo was one of the team’s main agents prior to his departure in season 13.

But some fans are predicting he could be back to take the role when the time comes.

“Michael Weatherly if Bull has been cancelled by the time Mark Harmon leaves,” Bhind45 wrote.

While CreamSoda-00 added: “What about Tony and McGee (Sean Murray) as co-heads of NCIS?”

A third called heed101 added: “Very Special Agent DiNozzo – pay him all the $$$.”

This would also not be the first time DiNozzo replaced Gibbs as the lead of the NCIS team.

Gibbs had left NCIS at the start of season four after a t3rr0r1st att4ck took place despite his warnings.

In his absence, DiNozzo was left in charge of the rest of the team for a few episodes.

Fans will recall that DiNozzo left the show permanently in season 13 to relocate to Paris and care for his daughter with Ziva David (Cote de Pablo).

However, he was mentioned again in season 17 when Ziva returned after she was presumed d3ad.

He and Ziva were last seen reuniting in Paris, but actor Michael Weatherly teased there was more to the story at the time.

He tweeted on February 20: “Hi. The thing to remember about DiNozzo Sr is that he is extremely gullible.

“The majority of Con-Men are. You didn’t witness a family reunion (or a long-ago d3ath!)… so maybe it didn’t happen?”

Therefore, this could be implying DiNozzo may return to NCIS once again after all.

Although, Weatherly is currently the lead in another CBS series called Bull.

The legal drama is popular with fans and has been renewed for a second season, so any return to NCIS may not be permanent.

Viewers will have to wait and see what happens next for Gibbs and the rest of the NCIS team.

  1. Dinozzo would be a perfect cast as Senior Very Special Agent Tony Dinozzo. My second choice would be Colonel Mann. Third choice is Bishop.
