NCIS: Will Tony DiNozzo return to replace Gibbs when he retires?

NCIS season 18 is on its way after being confirmed by CBS. But could Tony DiNozzo return to replace Gibbs in the series in a new theory?

NCIS season 18 will see the return of Leroy Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) as the head of the crime-solving team on CBS once again. However, some fans have begun to speculate whether the beloved character might retire soon and who could take over from him.

Will Tony DiNozzo return to replace Gibbs when he retires?

Gibbs has been the head of the NCIS team for 17 seasons so far with another outing already confirmed.

However, given his tenure on the show so far, there have been some rumours he might retire at some point in the next few seasons.

This was sparked by the season 16 episode where Gibbs discussed with his therapist about whether he would ever retire.

While Gibbs was resistant to ever leave his team behind, some viewers began speculating about who might take on the mantle from the beloved character when the time comes.

Fan BrotherAtxmic wrote on Reddit: “Mark Harmon is 68 now, and he has been on the show for 17 seasons.

“He will most likely leave at some point in the near future. Who could be brought in to replace him?”

In response, there was a suggestion Abigail Borin (Diane Neal) could take the part after being a guest star in earlier seasons.

However, there was also another name in the mix among fans of the show – Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly).

As fans will remember DiNozzo was one of the main agents on the team before his exit in season 13.

But some fans are predicting he could be back to take the role when the time comes.

Bhind45 wrote: “Michael Weatherly if Bull has been cancelled by the time Mark Harmon leaves.”

While CreamSoda-00 added: “What about Tony and McGee (Sean Murray) as co-heads of NCIS?”

A third called heed101 added: “Very Special Agent DiNozzo – pay him all the $$$.”

This would also not be the first time DiNozzo replaced Gibbs as the lead of the NCIS team.

Back at the beginning of season four, Gibbs had left NCIS after a terrorist attack had gone ahead despite his warnings.

In his absence, DiNozzo was left in charge of the rest of the team for a few episodes.

Fans will remember DiNozzo left the show permanently behind in season 13 to move to Paris and look after his daughter with Ziva David (Cote de Pablo).

However, he was mentioned again in season 17 when Ziva returned after she was presumed dead.

The last viewers knew, he and Ziva had reunited in Paris, but actor Michael Weatherly did tease there was more to the story at the time.

He tweeted on February 20: “Hi. The thing to remember about DiNozzo Sr is that he is extremely gullible.

“Most Con-Men are. You didn’t see a family reunion happen (or a long ago death happen!)… so maybe it didn’t happen?”

Therefore, this could be implying DiNozzo may return to NCIS once again after all.

Although, Weatherly is currently the lead in another CBS series called Bull.

The legal drama is popular among fans and has been renewed for another season, so it looks like any return to NCIS might not be permanent.

Viewers will just have to wait and see what will happen next for Gibbs and the NCIS team.
