R Scott Gemmill, the showrunner, has revealed whether or not a fan-favorite character from the long-running NCIS spin-off will return for one final mission in the upcoming series finale.

NCIS: Los Angeles, the first NCIS spin-off, was confirmed to be ending with its 14th season earlier this year. While the news devastated millions of CBS viewers, the final stretch of episodes will allow the show to finally resolve its numerous ongoing storylines while also bringing back some familiar faces.

Hetty Lange’s (Linda Hunt) storyline will be wrapped up in NCIS: LA’s highly anticipated final episode, according to Gemmill.

The team’s Operations Manager has been MIA for the last two seasons after leaving on a top-secret mission in Syria.

Despite the fact that she is still alive, agents G Callen (Chris O’Donnell) and Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) are no closer to locating her.

Meanwhile, Admiral Hollace Kilbride (Gerald McRaney) has stepped in for Hetty and NCIS Headquarters.

Some fans predicted that the final season would end with the agents going on a rescue mission to the Middle East, but the showrunner advised them to keep their expectations in check.

“We never get to that point,” he admitted. “However, it’s started. To put it another way,

Gemmill’s cryptic response to fans’ demands neither confirms nor denies Hunt’s appearance in future episodes.

He appears to imply that the team will at the very least plan an operation to recover their boss before something intervenes.

The series could simply end with the start of their mission just before the credits roll, with no appearance from the missing OM.

Hetty could also return to HQ alive and well, surprising the agents who were about to leave in search of her.

“We are going to have steps taken to resolve Hetty’s storyline in a way that I hope leaves fans feeling excited,” Gemmill promised.

In reality, Hunt, 77, stepped away from the series to protect herself during the C0v1d 19 pand3mic in 2020-21.

She has, however, made brief appearances on the show since then, either in the office or via video link, potentially setting up a final visit for season 14.

On a happier note, Gemmill provided an exciting update for fans hoping to see Callen finally marry his girlfriend Anna Kolcheck (Bar Paly).

“That’s entirely possible,” he hinted in Parade. “There are a couple of surprises.

“We try to put everyone in a good mood, and Callen and Anna are two examples.”

“Part of what happens in the finale is Callen reaching a point of contentment, which I believe is why he asked Anna to marry him.

“He’s gotten to the point where he’s much more present and looking to the future, whereas for 14 seasons, we’ve seen him trying to learn about his past and figure it out. I believe he is in a good place. They are both.”

As for viewers’ hopes the team could eventually reunite for an NCIS: LA movie, he added: “When you see the end, you’ll understand. We left it open for a possible next chapter.”

Meanwhile, there is still plenty of NCIS action for fans to enjoy, with new episodes of both NCIS: Hawaii and the flagship show set to air later this year.
