NCIS fans were recently treated to a double bill of episodes. Did one episode tease Timothy McGee might be leaving NCIS?

The latest episode of NCIS finally revealed the mystery of why Leroy Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) shot Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) in the season 18 premiere. However, the news also left some worried McGee may be too injured to return to the NCIS team. Here’s a quick recap of what happened and what the actor himself has revealed about his character’s future.

Is Timothy McGee leaving NCIS?

Head of the Snake saw Gibbs and Tobias Fornell’s (Joe Spano) quest to find drug traffickers come to a climax.

The action grew increasingly heated in the episode as the pair, along with the now clued-up rest of the team, closed in on the dealers.

This led to a tense undercover operation where McGee posed as Fornell to get close to those responsible while Gibbs watched from his sniper’s perch.

Things quickly went wrong as the plane McGee was heading towards was about to explode and the comms went down.

Gibbs was left with no choice but to shoot his team member in order to stop him walking toward the explosion.

McGee was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery but it was still touch and go for the character.

When Gibbs arrived at the hospital, Delilah McGee (Margo Harshman) even claimed he didn’t seem to be getting better very quickly at all.

Viewers were not given any firm update by the end of the episode, leaving many concerned about what is next for him.

Posting on Twitter viewer Kim Reid wrote: “Ouch! @NCIS_CBS was a rocky road ride. Hope McGee is going to be okay.”

“Shocked! It’s one thing to give someone a flesh wound, but he hit McGee’s femoral artery! He could bleed out from it!,” added Susan S Wheezly.

While Sue Land wondered: “Is McGee leaving the show? #ncis.”

Thankfully, there have been no warning signs actor Sean Murray is planning on leaving the show any time soon.

In fact, he revealed in a recent interview how his character is still alive for the foreseeable.

He told TV Insider: “We’ll see the aftermath of that shooting. McGee doesn’t die.”

However, viewers should not expect McGee to be returning to active duty any time soon.

He’ll likely be in recovery for a while before he can come back to the team so this may mean Murray is absent for a few episodes.

The actor added more about this: “A lot of it is not necessarily just physical but emotional.

“Just wrestling with and coming to terms with – even in the situation of it being done to save your life – the fact that somebody so close to you, that’s like a father figure to you, more so than even your real father was, shoots you.”

The actor also teased they will be exploring how Gibbs and McGee’s relationship changes as a result of this.

Murray said: “It’s not like McGee just throws on a Band-Aid and says ‘We’re good, Boss.’

“We very realistically explore some of the emotions and thoughts of the aftermath of what they really would be in dealing with that.

“Just the shock of what it is and the reality of how do we face this and move past this?”
