NCIS: Hawaii will be the newest franchise spin-off, replacing NCIS: New Orleans, and the first of the NCIS series to feature a female lead.

The NCIS family is growing with a new spin-off series called NCIS: Hawaii. The new addition of NCIS: Hawaii comes on the heels of the end of NCIS: New Orleans, which is currently in its 17th season. The NCIS franchise began with the original series, which stars Mark Harmon, in 2003 and remains one of the most-watched shows on television.

Reported by Deadline, CBS has made a straight-to-series order of a new NCIS spin-off, NCIS: HawaiiNCIS: Hawaii will be the first of the franchise to feature a female lead. This order is one of the new spin-offs of CBS’s three most popular procedural drama franchises of the past few decades, along with CSI: Vegas and FBI: InternationalHawaii will be executive produced by the showrunners and executive producers of the New Orleans spin-off, Christopher Silber and Jan Nash, among others. There is currently no one cast in the lead. Larry Teng, director of five episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles, will direct and executive produce the pilot.

Given the boundaries the show is already breaking by focusing on a female lead, NCIS: Hawaii should be a great addition to the franchise. Hopefully it will follow in the footsteps of  NCIS: Los Angeles, which premiered in 2009 and remains one of the most lucrative off-network deals that’s ever been made. NCIS fans will soon be able to witness the crime world that exists off the mainland, but until then, they will just have to wait for further details as they are announced.
